Contract Mining

Peter Kendall, prior to his position as Managing Director of CMC, worked for more than 10 years in a variety of management positions for mining companies, contract miners, equipment manufacturers and dealers giving him a broad background from which to build a highly competitive Contract Mining service.

Peter's most recent previous position was that of Maintenance Superintendent for Trakindo, at the huge Batu Hijau project on Sumbawa island in Indonesia, operated by Newmont Nusa Tenggara. At its time of inception the project had the distinction of being the largest MARC contract in the world, set up in a three-way alliance between Newmont, Trakindo, and Caterpillar. The culture, philosophies, and methodologies developed on this world-class project are similar to those now used by CMC.

Our Mission is to be a world-class contract miner in terms of:

  • Safety;
  • Production rates;
  • Cost per tonne;
  • Equipment availability.

Equipment Maintenance

In the past 10 years the business climate of large- scale, open-cut mining equipment-maintenance and management has changed considerably, with the advent of MARC contracts supplied to major mining companies by various dealer networks.

This is due to a number of reasons:

  • High business competition;
  • Recognition by owner miners that equipment management can be performed more cost-effectively by a specialist;
  • Risk transfer of maintenance is attractive to mining companies;
  • Equipment is more complex and higher in value;
  • Resource constraints;
  • Higher shareholder expectations. While this has improved the focus on equipment performance and cost-effectiveness worldwide, it has also presented a range of new problems to the industry:
  • Many MARC suppliers have been pushed into areas of equipment management by competition that they did not fully understand;
  • The growth market of this industry has vastly exceeded available resources;
  • The contract labour hire market has boomed to the point that the quality of expertise provided this industry has fallen dramatically;
  • Many existing contracts are mismanaged: consequently contract providers and mining companies involved are being impacted to their financial detriment.

CMC recognises enormous industry demand for a hand picked specialist group of equipment management personnel to provide services ranging from conventional labour hire through to a complete contract management package.

The background of Peter Kendall is such that the necessary wherewithal - contacts, experience, and personal reputation - is already well established within the mining industry worldwide. This allows CMC to draw on a diverse cross section of expertise to provide a solution tailored to the specific needs of the client.
